Horsepower

One of the first things you have to take into account is the horsepower. This determines how efficiently your boat will perform and whether it’ll be able to keep up with all your on-the-water activities. Contrary to what you might be thinking, bigger isn’t necessarily better, but you will have to consider the size of your boat!

If your boat isn’t capable of handling what a big and powerful outboard motor can deliver, then you might end up damaging its frame and transom! On the other hand, however, if you get an engine that isn’t powerful enough for your boat, you won’t be able to make much headway in a decent amount of time. 

Before you start to look at outboard motors for sale, refer to your owner’s manual or check the National Marine Manufacturers Association Certification Plate inside the stern of your boat. This will give you the information about your boat’s horsepower rating so you can get the right engine to power your vessel.   

Fuel Type

You can power an outboard motor in a few different ways. Most of the traditional models use gasoline, which is easy to obtain. A lot of the new options will be electric, which are powered by a battery. These are often more environmentally friendly and much quieter, which is why they’re preferred by a lot of anglers. Finally, there are propane-fueled models, which offer lower emissions than gasoline and fewer mechanical issues in general.  

Should You Double Up?

One question you’ll have to consider is: is it better to get one outboard motor or two? If you’re getting the same amount of horsepower from both options, then there’s no big difference what your selection is. However, some people prefer to get a second motor because they like the security of having a backup on hand just in case the first one dies suddenly. So you won’t be stuck on the water, waiting for help to arrive to be able to get back to shore. The downside is the additional cost. If money’s no object, then it’s worth considering, but you won’t necessarily be missing out if you only use one motor.
